WINDSET FARMS® is excited to announce the planting of its 48 acre sustainably lit greenhouse expansion in Delta, B.C.! The new greenhouse, in conjunction with the addition of LED lighting in Windset’s existing greenhouse facility totaling 48 acres of Windset’s 92 acres in Delta, B.C., makes it the largest LED lit facility in Western North America. Windset’s Santa Maria facility is currently the largest single-site vegetable greenhouse operation in the United States. The Delta expansion was completed Summer 2024, allowing Windset to utilize its increased capacity to better serve the local market year round.
This expansion is a testament to Windset’s commitment to sustainable year round cultivation through use of renewable hydroelectric power and biomass boilers for heating. The new lit expansion will house various crops throughout the year supplying Western Canada and The Pacific Northwest. With over 2,500 acres of greenhouse vegetable production, Windset Farms customers can rely on consistent, high-quality supply with superior flavour and freshness from three regions across North America: British Columbia, California, and Mexico further lowering Windset’s carbon footprint. Windset is also proud to be able to help reduce food waste and increase the regions food security by producing more locally grown product utilizing sustainable operations with thoughtful planning 365 days of the year.
The Delta build has incorporated advanced technologies to ensure operations are as sustainable and efficient as possible. We collaborated with BC Hydro to utilize renewable hydroelectric power for our lit production. We also opted for LED lighting because of its energy efficiency, long lifespan, and customizable light spectrum. LEDs also produce less heat, which helps maintain ideal greenhouse temperatures. State-of-the-art thermal screens were installed to prevent heat loss, resulting in energy savings of 40 percent.
Additionally, the 48-acres of lit greenhouse facilities have been equipped with automated screens, preventing light exposure to the outside environment.
